FROM OUR PRESIDENT, SUE HUTCHISON
Although school is back in session, it certainly doesn't feel like fall! Regardless of the
heat, the Desert Ridge Parents' Group is already planning activities to celebrate the
fall season. As the weather cools off in late September, we look forward to another
DRPG Meet and Greet at the Park on the 27th. Last fall, we had a great morning of
bagels, juice and play time for the kids while the parents visited. This event will be a
good place to network and form playgroups, commiserate with other parents and get a
free breakfast while the children burn off some energy. Molly Glenn is working on a
fabulous Fall Festival for October 18th, so mark your calendars! We could use a cochair
for the Fall Festival and another volunteer to assist JoAnn Polk with our
early December Winter Celebration. These are both small events requiring a
minimal time commitment up front, and it's a lot of fun to help out with the planning, attend the successful
event and get to know some other members while you're there!
Every fall, we begin thinking about the need for DRPG volunteers for the coming calendar year. DRPG has
offered members many opportunities to build relationships here in our community. The club has provided
meals for families in need or with a new baby, friendship and support via DRPG playgroup members, fun
kids activities and family events, and the escape of a Moms', Dads' or Parents' Night Out. Right now, the
same ten or twelve parents are responsible for planning and executing all the activities for over 100 member
adults and children. Although they do an excellent job, it is hard to fill all the roles with such a small army.
Let's bring some new faces to the table, like yours! If you have enjoyed what DRPG has provided, what
can you do to support DRPG in the coming year? There are many interesting positions requiring just a
couple of hours a month of your time.
Volunteering for a board position is very rewarding because you influence the growth and activities
of DRPG, while giving back to a group that has provided so much. Board positions include President,
Vice President/Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Director, Newsletter Editor, Playgroup Coordinator,
Activities Directors (Kids Activities, Parents' Activities and/or Moms' and Dads' Nights Out), Hospitality
Director and Philanthropy Chair. Want to help out but don't want the ongoing commitment of a board
position? Event Coordinators are responsible for a one-time event or activity. Event Coordinators plan
events such as our Bike Rodeo, Wildlife in the Wash, Spring Carnival, Mother's Day Craft, Father's Day
Craft, Fall Festival and Winter Celebration. Without more volunteers, some of these beloved activities may
not appear on the calendar for 2009. Please let me know how you can help DRPG by sending me a
note at President@DRPGonline.com
